It's definitely something we're after as far as interface is concerned.

Looks nice, should be quite a bit better than my PS3 interface, but can it play MW2?

This is SIGNIFICANTLY better than the Box office interface - is there indexing?

Yes, the interface is much better. However, because the QNAP NMP-1000 is also a more complex device, it actually takes a while to boot up from a cold start. I just end up putting it in NAS mode when it's not in use.

It also has indexing (File categorization) which brings it closer to the style of media handling I want it to be, but it isn't perfect. Also I think there's a bug in the system where if I play from the indexed file list rather than locating the song manually through the file system, it will display the album art but fail to display an ID3 tags. I sent this information to QNAP and they should be getting back to me shortly to see how it goes.

Huh, that is one weird bug. Could get annoying after a while not to have the ID3 tags.

This is basically a full featured QNAP NAS, except you don't get 4 drives but all the media features.

Cool. Looks like it takes a 3.5" sata. Can you benchmark it to see the NAS performance? I'll be interested in buying one if it works as a good NAS I can't find any info on it. Also does it use the new QNAP interface?

Yep, I will benchmark its network throughput, as always. I can't seem to find much info on it either, but it has a Sigma Design 500MHz processor and 256MB RAM over Gigabit LAN should deliver at least QNAP TS-409 level performance... just a guess; I haven't tried it yet.

Surprisingly it doesn't have QNAP's excellent AJAX based web configuration interface, and I was pretty disappointed in this regard. Also you can't change any media settings on the device.

In other news, I updated to the the newest firmware (Which ironically is more than a month old haha) and it fixed the ID3 tag bug. If you don't have an internal HDD installed, you must update via USB on the TV. Other than that it works excellent otherwise. Still testing but I really like it. The interface can also use some work, but it's significantly better than others I've tested.

Unfortunately, yes. You are going to get the legacy QNAP web UI, which I don't really understand why they did that. :P

Whipped out my dSLR camera and took a pic:

Not bad, maybe it will have the new UI in a future update like the original QNAP did.

The front display on the QNAP itself? It displays the menu items. You can basically operate the NMP-1000 without turning on your TV (Although it is not FULLY integrated which I'll get to in my review.)

Other minor annoyances to take note:
- Can't control music unless you're in the Now Playing menu, despite the hardware buttons.
- No volume control over S/PDIF.
- Does HDMI audio out even when not asked to. (COULD be beneficial, but I'll go over this in my review.)

Ahhhh looks like I'll be itching to buy one. Looks real nice and it can double as a NAS.

Yep, I'll post some benchmarks of the system when I get around to it.

I also reported a bug to an engineer at QNAP:

Quote

I just want to let you know that while operating the device using the latest available firmware, when I play music and I select songs manually from the All Music index, it will always list the song as 1/(number of songs) instead of the actual song number on the list. When I hit Skip then it will show to its normal numeric value.

Quite an expensive Media Center Streamer/NAS, if you ask me. Looks great though!

Considering a 4-bay QNAP NAS costs upward of $500, this is a single NAS device with a powerful media streamer. It is expensive, but with the amount of features and build/finish it may be well justified. Again I haven't benchmarked it yet, but it is a far more complicated device hardware wise compared to the Patriot Box Office.

I guess that is true, but I guess we will have to wait on the review to determine if this worth a buy or not.
