Apple's CEO Steve Jobs has been on somewhat of an email rampage as of late, with many customers who email him getting a (brief) reply to their questions. One such case, reported by The Unofficial Apple Weblog, has revealed that the iPhone OS will be getting a feature requested for since its initial release: a universal email inbox.

The emailer in question, one Julio Rodriguez, asked Jobs if the iPhone will ever get a universal email inbox to help manage multiple email accounts at once, instead of having to switch between them. Jobs answered with nothing more than, "Yep," which leads one to assume that the feature will make its debut in the iPhone OS 4.0 (which will most likely be released in a few months), or possibly in a release of the mobile operating system which could coincide with the launch of the iPad on April 3.

Apple has slowly but steadily remedied the common complaints about its mobile device range since the initial release, with copy & paste functionality implemented last year, and other tweaks made as time has progressed. For those skeptical about the authenticity of the email, a screenshot of the headers was included, showing the email client (Mail on the iPad) and mail servers used, both giving strong evidence that Jobs was indeed the sender.

Yeah I read that article. Sounds great! Does that mean that all Gmail/Hotmail/Exchange/custom emails will be aggregated in the one email inbox? Noob question I know, but I just want to make sure that I'm not imagining it the wrong way, haha.

Yay :)

I only use one email address, so I don't see what's the whole deal behind it haha.

Useful for me since I have school e-mail, work e-mail, Hotmail, Gmail and my Telus mail all in my iPhone :)

Going to make it way easier rather than going through each account to check e-mail and waiting for them to download on each account.

Thanks :)

Yeah, I only have a Gmail and Hotmail account, so I'd keep them separate (if I had an iPhone). I just like to have each on its own screen. Having said that, it would be excellent if users could choose between having a universal mailbox, or switch to having each email in its own mailbox. That would be a good move (to let users choose) IMO.

It does provide a little more flexibility in consolidating them all into one screen. I have a few friends who gets pretty ticked off in checking multiple addresses in that fashion. I just forward everything to my GMail from my APH account so I get notified of any new messages. I rarely find a need to reply on my phone anyway :)

:) Comes in handy for me - saves me time from switching between screens with my home and work email.
