Just curious -- and it's also a preview of tomorrow's poll. :D

I have one XP build for legacy printer usage, the printer has so much ink left, then it can move up to 7.

Much to my chagrin... *puts hand up* :( It's running on my 3.5-year-old main desktop (Athlon 3000+ @ 2GHz, 512MB upgraded to 2GB RAM, 160GB HDD, integrated graphics). However, now that I was able to "obtain"* (;) ;)) Windows 2008 Standard for free, I'm thinking of installing it on said desktop.

So on that note, does anyone have experience with installing WS2008 on a computer with similar specifications as above?

*: What? I got it off Dreamspark. You didn't think I got it using dubious methods, did you, now? :P

What about Windows XP Mode? Or is this a driver issue, therefore rendering XP Mode ineffective?

Alternatively, you could just install 7 and run a really basic Windows XP virtual machine.

Kenneth, what printer is it? Windows 7 might just have built in drivers. Or as Redeemed said, you can install the printer under XP mode and it should work under Windows 7 as well.

I don't see a problem with running Windows Server 2008 R2 on that machine, but just remember it is a server/workstation OS; you'll run into more trouble than you want if you are just using it as a desktop computer. Just get Windows 7 instead.

No - tired of people (esp. those "IT professionals") hailing XP. It's 2010 dammit.

:P Like I said in the other Thread it's a 10 yr old OS. It looks and feels Lackluster compared to Windows Vista/7.

It's an old Lexmark printer, I tried already under XP mode on this computer but it did not work, so I will go with XP until I run down the ink.

Why won't it work under XP mode? It's just a driver issue right?

Yes but even in XP mode it doesn't work, no worries that computer is real old anyways. It doesn't deserve 7 and I don't have any more keys/copies.

Interesting poll results this week. Looks like most people support the long due upgrade. To be honest most people who still root for XP (As in refuse to accept modern OSes, not for legacy driver purposes) are so-called "IT professionals" who knows nothing about hardware performance or software optimization.

Only on my few machines that can't/won't run 7. I only use those machines for ancient hardware testing (AGP cards mainly) and a simple HTPC.

Well basically everyone voted it's 2010 not 2001.

Agreed, as long as it isn't Windows 7 Starter, that is a disgrace of an OS.

Just to bring it up, I agree Windows 7 is very scalable in terms of hardware. Although it does run quite slowly on a computer with 1GB of RAM. No complaints though, it is 2010. Almost 2011. :P

For what it's worth...at BCIT all computers are using Windows 7 Enterprise :P

At least there's a certain peace of mind knowing the up and coming IT professionals are using up to date technology!

SFU updated to Windows 7 last month from XP or Server 2003 or something along those lines. Regardless, it is a lot snappier.

That's kind of sad -- we got some pretty decent machines here at University of Calgary, but it's all Windows XP :S Fortunately we do have Office 2007, but seriously!

It's also surprising to see how IT professionals are actually up to date with technology
