Can't believe it's already 5 years.

LOVE my Xbox. Had doubts when it first came out, had a few RRODs but the last replacement is going strong. Forza3 and Halo 3 are among my favorites. Excellent console and beat Sony by a full year too!

I still remember back in 2005 when I was still in Edmonton and Grade 11. Some of my friends who was a Sony fan couldn't wait for the PS3 and just bought an Xbox 360, and it was the craze ever since. In my opinion, it was the Xbox 360's one year advantage release date that solidified its position in the gaming market in grabbing the 'next gen' title first. Halo 3 and Forza 3 solidified its position. The original Xbox could be considered successful, but the Xbox 360 took it away and floored it.

I attribute the growth of the Xbox360 > PS3 to be that one year advantage as well as Xbox Live, although it isn't free it surely beats PSN hands down. Hoping for a few more good years to come from both consoles, not looking forward to a next gen one yet.

Xbox Live used to cost money :| But Microsoft smartened up and made it free. There are some very sweet deals lately on Xbox 250GB with Forza 3 and Alan Wake at Best Buy in Canada.

It's free on PC but not 360, http://www.xbox.com/...S/live/joinlive
The free version is near useless if you can't play games multiplayer...

Yep, free is pretty useless. It's only 50 bucks a year - but those ****ers just rose the price to 60.

Seriously, it's only 50 bucks a year. You spend more money per year upgrading your computer than that. :P

Still not free and TL just mentioned it's $60 a year now, kind of steep for services you could get for free on PC. I mean $60 a year to play online, don't forget you need an internet connection as well.

In celebration of the Xbox 360's 5th birthday, I decided to pick one up and round out my media center.

lol, good buy. Just in time for the new 250GB version -- I also read somewhere that statistically, a good amount of people use their 360 for streaming and not just gaming.

Probably, same can be said for the PS3, nice to be able to stream things without turning on an HTPC. Both are adequate streamers and can run quite well. Just remember if you have the slim, don't move it when there is a disk spinning. Scratches galore after that...

I got the new 4GB 360 slim, and performed my own non-Microsoft 250GB hard drive upgrade (1/3 of the regular cost, w00t). I have considered using it for streaming, but since I already have the new media center nearby, I really won't need to use the Xbox streaming right now. It might come in better use after I get a house and have multiple TVs. So far, I only have 4 games (and I only have 3 of those, because they were on sale for a total of $9) - Lego Indiana Jones, Lego Batman, Perfect Dark Zero, and Alan Wake.

I would do the same by there have been cases where you get permabanned from XBL if you use custom stuff like hard drives. I would lose a bit of money to make sure my console doesn't get banned. Either way it does save you quite a bit of money.

As far as I know you won't get banned for a hack hard drive on the Xbox 360.

Especially when the Xbox thinks it is completely legit and from Microsoft, haha. :)
