I used to run software to organize them and mass name them - but even that is tedious. How do you guys organize it?

I have them all in a folder called "Camera Pictures" and then all of them are divided into folders with the event that they belong to.
If they are technology pictures they just go into a folder "Technology" and everything else just goes into "Miscellaneous"

Personally I have a folder called Photo Loads under My Pictures. Each subfolder is separated into years, followed by folders separated by date of copying photos from camera to the system. However since I have multiple cameras it might be affixed by a tag on the name on the folder to indicate which camera it's from.
For example, if I load photos today, there will be a folder under '2011', called:
'January 10, 2011' if it is loaded from my compact camera.
'dSLR January 10, 2011' if loaded from my dSLR camera
'iPhone January 10, 2011' if loaded from my iPhone.
Other than the iPhone, all of them are unbranded so if a new compact camera replaces a preceding one (Eg. My SD790 IS taking over the SD300 or whatever I had earlier) the difference is not marked.
It agree it is probably not the best way of organizing photos, but it is the fastest and easiest, and I have had no problems finding any of my photos as long as I know approximately when it was taken.

I usually sort them into folders based on general subject (Computer, Nature, House Projects, etc.), then inside the respective folder by detailed subject/project.
Example:
Nature
>River 2010
>Wildlife 2010
House
>Master Bath
>Main Bath
>Kitchen
Example:
Nature
>River 2010
>Wildlife 2010
House
>Master Bath
>Main Bath
>Kitchen

+1 that's how I do mine as well. I think Chc's File System is quite unique but as long as it works.

Interesting how most of you have the same filing algorithm and mine is so different. But yeah I've never had problems finding anything

I put them in categories in my Pictures folder. I never rename photos.

Picasa is the best image organiser for me. It really helps me a lot.
