HP’s Supposed $199 Stream Notebook Actually Debuts with $300 Price Tag

From DailyTech: Back in mid-July, Microsoft told us all that it would be taking the fight directly to Chromebooks running Google's Chrome OS with the help of a new $199 from Hewlett-Packard. At the time, Microsoft said that the $199 HP Stream would prevail over Chromebooks by offering rock bottom pricing and the unmatched versatility of the Windows software ecosystem.

Two months later, the HP Stream is here, but the $199 price tag didn’t come along for the trip. Instead, the device will be priced at $300. For that price, you get a 14” display (1366x768), AMD A4 Micro-6400T Quad processor, 2GB of RAM, a 32GB SSD, two USB 2.0 ports, one USB 3.0 port, 802.11n, Bluetooth, and an HDMI port.

The machine isn’t exactly light either, coming in at 3.8 pounds. And battery life is somewhat respectable at six and a half hours per charge.

Now that we’ve been spoiled with the idea of a $120 tablet from a reputable company (Toshiba), a $300 “Chromebook Killer” just doesn’t get our blood pumping. Especially when you consider that Toshiba throws in a year’s worth of Office 365 and 1TB of OneDrive storage space for free. HP, on the other hand, is handing out 100GB of OneDrive storage space free for two years and just a 30-day trial of Office 365.
