From DailyTech: When Apple released its first update to iOS 8, iOS 8.0.1, things didn’t go so smoothly. iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus users that downloaded the update OTA found that their devices had cellular connectivity and Touch ID disabled. Apple managed to pull the update within an hour and a day later released iOS 8.0.2 to address the bugs that 8.0.1 was supposed to fix (along with the new one that 8.0.1 introduced).
Apple is hoping to avoid updates problems this time around with iOS 8.1. While iOS 8.0.1/8.0.2 was mainly a maintenance release, iOS 8.1 actually adds new features to the mix for iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch users. The first big addition is support for Apple Pay, which is Apple’s new mobile payments service.
Apple Pay allows iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus owners to make wireless payments at retail locations by placing their smartphone near a payment reader and authenticating the transaction with a fingerprint. Apple Pay supports Visa, MasterCard, and American Express and has partnered with a number of financial institutions including Bank of America, CapitalOne, Chase, Citi, and Wells Fargo.
iOS 8.1 also brings with it two addition to Continuity. SMS relay allows iPads and Macs running Yosemite to receive regular SMS messages from your iPhone. Previously, only iMessages would be sent to all of the devices on your iCloud account. Users will also be able to start SMS-based conversations from a Yosemite-based Mac or iPad.
Another Continuity feature added with iOS 8.1 is Instant Hotspot. As long as your iPhone is in close proximity to your Mac running Yosemite (both devices must support Bluetooth 4.0) and both devices are logged into the same iCloud account, the Mac will be able to remotely access the phone’s Personal Hotspot capabilities without actually having to dig into the iOS settings menu.
