From DailyTech: Before the iPad Air 2 was announced, reports had suggested that Apple’s flagship tablet would feature an A8X processor with 2GB of RAM; twice that of its predecessor. For all of those iPad Air owners that witnessed application crashes or Safari tab refreshing, this was welcome news.
Now comes further confirmation of 2GB onboard for the A8X along with the news that there are now three cores running at 1.5GHz instead of two. For comparison, the “lowly” A8 used in the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus is a dual core unit running at 1.4GHz, with just 1GB of RAM onboard.
Benchmarks using iOS CPU Mark show the iPad Air 2 (in this case an LTE model), known internally as iPad5,4, smoking not only its predecessor but also the new iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus. iOS Memory Mark scores aren’t nearly as impressive, as they fall in line with the iPhone 5S and below that of the previous generation iPad Air and iPad mini 2.
Besides the improved A8X processor and 2GB of RAM, the iPad Air 2 also brings with it a thinner body Touch ID, a revised 8MP rear camera, 802.11ac W-Fi, and Bluetooth 4.1. The tablet launches this week with a starting price of $499 for the 16GB Wi-Fi model.
