Apple files patent for wearable health device

From CNET: Apple is a mysterious beast at the best of times, but one way to figure out what it might be working on next is to trawl through its patent applications.

An application published on Thursday showed that the company wants to lock down ownership of a new wearable health device that could be fashioned into different accessories. It could, for example, be a watch, a ring, a brooch or something else entirely.

Spotted by Patently Apple, the device is capable of performing an electrocardiogram -- a simple test that measures the heart's rhythm. Usually the reading taking an electrocardiogram, or an ECG, differs depending on the distance of the device from the heart, but the device that Apple wants to patent describes a calibration process that means it can calculate accurate readings no matter where the device is on the body.

An important thing to remember about patents is that big tech companies make many applications, but it doesn't necessarily mean they are currently working that particular concept or product, or that it will ever see the light of day.
