Amazon Prime's delivery by drone just became a reality

From CNET: Rush orders just got a whole lot speedier. Today, Amazon announced the first successful Prime Air delivery. On December 7th, 2016, an Amazon drone dropped off a package in the backyard of a customer, 13 minutes after the customer ordered it.

Jeff Bezos, Amazon's CEO, touted the achievement on Twitter.

According to Amazon, the delivery is the first fully autonomous one with no human pilot. The program, still in a private beta with only two customers in the UK, will eventually be able to drop off a package in your yard within 30 minutes of you placing an order.

The autonomous drones can carry packages up to five pounds, and are guided by GPS. Obviously, the service will only be available for certain items. And even though the first test was a success, you'll probably still have to wait awhile to take advantage of this service. Again, the closed beta is only two people. From there, Prime Air will expand its scope in the UK, and then move outward.

Still, it's probably only a matter of time until you can expect to greet your friendly neighborhood delivery drone.
