OCZ Vertex 3.20 240GB Review (Page 10 of 10)

Page 10 - Conclusion

Is the OCZ Vertex 3.20 240GB really 0.20 better than the OCZ Vertex 3 240GB? Well, it really depends what your definition of "better" is. Before we even get to that, let me provide a bit of background information. The "0.20" designation at the end refers to the 20nm Intel flash ICs. With that in mind, I would like to point out we do not actually have a "Plain Jane" OCZ Vertex 3 240GB. We only have the Max IOPS variant, which is slightly faster than the vanilla version. However, what we do know is the OCZ Vertex 3 240GB's performance slots between the Agility 3 240GB and the Vertex 3 Max IOPS; adding onto that, the Vertex 3 should be really close to the Pyro SE 240GB, because they have almost identical hardware. With that in mind, did the Vertex 3.20 perform as expected? I would say yes. When it comes to raw speed, the Vertex 3.20 is almost as fast, if not faster, than the Vertex 3. In areas where high input/output operations are demanded, the Vertex 3.20 will fall back a bit, but hey -- this is a mainstream performance drive. So is it 6.7% better than its predecessor? If it comes at the right price, definitely. However, my concern is for about $260 at press time, the Vertex 3.20 240GB does not offer a whole lot of value to the consumer. You can buy the faster Kingston HyperX 3K 240GB for the same price, or save some money and get the Kingston SSDNow V300 240GB instead. Heck, SanDisk's Ultra Plus 256GB is almost $100 less! Knowing OCZ, they will probably drop their price soon to very competitive levels. But for the money they want right now, the Vertex 3.20 is a bit expensive for what you get.

OCZ provided this product to APH Networks for the purpose of evaluation.

Since April 30, 2007, Number Ratings have been dropped for all CPUs, motherboards, RAM, SSD/HDDs, and graphics cards. This is to ensure the most appropriate ratings are reflected without the inherent limits of using numbers. Everything else will continue using the Number Rating System.
