About HD Tach 3.0.1.0

HD Tach is a low level hardware benchmark for random access read/write storage devices such as hard drives, removable drives (ZIP/JAZZ), flash devices, and RAID arrays. HD Tach uses custom device drivers and other low level Windows interfaces to bypass as many layers of software as possible and get as close to the physical performance of the device possible.

After giving the OCZ Vertex 4 256GB a clean format and ensuring alignment and everything is correct, I fired it up for some testing in HD Tach. While HD Tach is more of a 'drag race' than a clear indication of real life performance, it is an excellent storage performance reference among SSDs with the same controller, and has been our favorite benchmark long before hard drives even cracked the 50MB/s mark. With an average read speed of 309.5MB/s according to HD Tach in single disk configuration, it is definitely within the range of what we could possibly expect for a SATA 6Gb/s solid state disk, but a bit behind SSDs equipped with a SandForce SF-2281 controller. Again, while it is probably not too advisable to compare drives with different controllers, it is interesting to see that the OCZ Octane 512GB actually does 335MB/s in the same test.
