Patriot Blaze 240GB Review (Page 10 of 10)

Page 10 - Conclusion

Timing is everything when it comes to technology, as marvel ideas are born everyday, while older ones become mainstream or even obsolete. For example, if Turing was still trying to develop his Enigma device today, you would say he is way behind in his time. Considering even a smartphone is hundreds of times better and more efficient than any computer made during the Second World War, a machine of Turing's time would not surprise anyone. Of course, I am in no ways dismissing his machine, as it is the foundation of computing, but this is because it was revolutionary for its time. So looking at our current product today, the Patriot Blaze 240GB, is not a brand new thing. In fact, it falls in line with many other budget solid state drives, like the Silicon Power Slim S80 240GB or the OCZ ARC 100 240GB. Performance as a whole is average, but there are a few gotchas. While the stated 555MB/s and 535MB/s is among one of the fastest combinations of read and write compared to other SSDs, the closer-to-reality tests show performance is mediocre at best. Patriot's three-year warranty is also the same as other drives in this market. Thus, it is hard to really say Patriot has really done the unimaginable. Rather, it has produced a solid state drive that is able to do the job. Speaking of price, the Patriot Blaze 240GB can be found for around $110 USD, or about $0.46/GB. This is a similar dollar amount to one of our most recently reviewed SSD, the SanDisk Ultra II 240GB. The real kicker is the SanDisk offers considerably better performance than the Blaze for a similar price. This does not make our solid state drive in question a bad product, as it is a viable option if you are looking to replace your aging spinning disk. However, with the Ultra II (And a handful of other value drives that are also pretty fast) already on the market, the Patriot Blaze may have been just a little late to the game.

Patriot provided this product to APH Networks for the purpose of evaluation.

Since April 30, 2007, Number Ratings have been dropped for all CPUs, motherboards, RAM, SSD/HDDs, and graphics cards. This is to ensure the most appropriate ratings are reflected without the inherent limits of using numbers. Everything else will continue using the Number Rating System.

The Patriot Blaze 240GB is a decent upgrade for anyone looking to replace their hard drive, but for $110 USD, there are considerably faster drives in the market today at the same price.
