Seagate Laptop SSHD ST500LM000 500GB Review (Page 10 of 10)

Page 10 - Conclusion

Do we have a full picture of the performance of the Seagate Laptop SSHD ST500LM000 500GB based on the benchmark results alone? Not exactly. But seeing how it performs in real life, along with the statistics we have collected in the last seven pages or so, I think we are in a good place for discussion. As far as the synthetic tests are concerned, where the Laptop SSHD operated in purely uncached mode, it delivered exactly as what we have expected for a single platter 5400RPM laptop drive. There really is not much you can do to change... well, you know, physics. In PCMark 7, where we had the opportunity to see how the Laptop SSHD approach the problem with caching enabled, we have witnessed quite a bit of performance gain in subsequent runs, which will translate to what you will see in the real world. With 8GB of NAND flash memory on board to learn and adapt to your frequently accessed data, the Seagate ST500LM000 500GB is an economical approach to taking your boot speed and application loading performance up a level without breaking the bank. Sure, it is not as fast as a pure SSD, even with cached data. But two years after this product was released, it still makes a lot of sense. Recently, we have seen some pretty amazing value SSDs hit the market, like the $180 Crucial BX100 500GB and $200 Crucial MX200 500GB. But for $60 at press time -- one-third of the price of the cheapest Crucial -- the Seagate Laptop SSHD ST500LM000 500GB, in 2015, is still able to undercut the purebreds by a very convincing margin. If you are looking to give your laptop a boost in performance, while still keeping a reasonably large storage capacity, going hybrid may not be an ingenious solution, but it gets pretty close.

Seagate provided this product to APH Networks for the purpose of evaluation.

Since April 30, 2007, Number Ratings have been dropped for all CPUs, motherboards, RAM, SSD/HDDs, and graphics cards. This is to ensure the most appropriate ratings are reflected without the inherent limits of using numbers. Everything else will continue using the Number Rating System.
