About PCMark Vantage

PCMark Vantage is a PC benchmark suite designed for Windows Vista offering one-click simplicity for casual users and detailed, professional grade testing for industry, press and enthusiasts.

A PCMark score is a measure of your computer’s performance across a variety of common tasks such as viewing and editing photos, video, music and other media, gaming, communications, productivity and security.

From desktops and laptops to workstations and gaming rigs, by comparing your PCMark Vantage score with other similar systems you can find the hardware and software bottlenecks that stop you getting more from your PC.

PCMark Vantage aims to shed a little more insight into real life performance of your computer hardware by semi-synthetic means -- and all insight is good, right? The great thing about standardized tests is anyone can repeat them and get very similar results, given identical hardware. Well, I am not going to narrate the stuff above in detail, because we all know graphs are there for a very good reason. Just to give you a bit of insight if you are too lazy to go through all nine comparisons, the Silicon Power Slim S80 240GB performed pretty mid-pack at best. PCMark Vantage uses some pretty simple simulations, so it is pretty optimized for single disks with relatively fast linear read (It does funny things when you got a RAID array though). The results were not bad, but compared to the modern low cost SSD, there are clearly better choices out there. Among the four we value drives we are zeroing in on today -- the OCZ ARC 100 240GB, Patriot Blaze 240GB, Crucial MX100 256GB, and SanDisk Ultra II 240GB -- the Silicon Power Slim S80 240GB was booted by every single one of them overall. In the subcategories, it was dead last in four out of eight tests by a very considerable margin; in the remaining four, it only posted better results than the Patriot Blaze 240GB featuring the same Phison controller; again trailing behind the rest of the competition by a very wide gap.
