Fixing Windows 10 problems with Start Menu, Cortana, Action Center, etc

Recommended Posts

For some reason, a few days ago, my Windows 10 Pro installation on my 2015 MacBook Pro started to act up.

- Start menu not responsive to clicks

- Cortana won't load

- Action center won't load

- Anything that uses the Modern UI or whatever you call it now is extremely slow to load (ie., settings)

Things I've tried that didn't work that could work for you:

Command Prompt in Admin Mode:

sfc /scannow
Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

Using PowerShell in Admin Mode:

Get-AppXPackage -AllUsers |Where-Object {$_.InstallLocation -like "*SystemApps*"} | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register "$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml"}

I even tried to do a repair install of Windows to no avail.

What DID work:

- Open Event Viewer (Run -> eventvwr)

- Go to Windows Log -> Application

I noticed there were lot of ESENT Errors on the database logged. View the description of the error, navigate to the database directory, and copy/rename the problem database log file in question. Instant fix. :D
