Microsoft Only Sold 1,639 Xbox One X at Japan Launch

From PC Mag: One of the hardest markets for Western gaming companies to crack is Japan. Japanese gamers prefer to buy homegrown hardware, and both Sony and Nintendo enjoy very healthy sales in their home territory. Microsoft? Not so much.

Microsoft always struggles to sell its Xbox consoles in Japan despite repeated marketing pushes and generous offers to the Japanese consumer. When the Xbox One launched there in December 2013, it only sold 23,562 units during the first four days. For the PS4 launch, 309,000 units were sold, and even the unloved Wii U sold 308,000 units.

So what about the Xbox One X? It now holds the crown of most powerful gaming console, but did it sell at launch in Japan? Nope. Microsoft managed to shift a grand total of just 1,639 units according to Famitsu.

To put that into perspective, during the same Nov. 6-12 sales period the PS4 Pro sold 6,028 units, the PS4 sold 23,613 units, and the Nintendo Switch sold 84,593 units. The Xbox One X was even out sold by the PS Vita, 3DS, and 2DS XL. It did, however, sell more than the Xbox One S, PS3, and Wii U.

As Kotaku reports, stock of the Xbox One X actually sold out in Japan. That wasn't due to demand, though. Retailers decided there was no point buying more stock than was required to fill pre-orders. And as predicted, there were no lines outside stores on launch day in Japan. There is simply no interest.
