Hitachi Unveils New CinemaStar Hard Drives

From DailyTech: Hitachi announced a pair of new hard drives today in its CinemaStar family. The new drives include the CinemaStar 7K1000.B and the CinemaStar 5K320. Both of the CinemaStar drives are aimed at use inside digital video recorders (DVRs).

The CinemaStar 7K1000.B ranges in capacity from 160GB to 1TB of storage and spins at 7,200 RPM. The drive is a 3.5-inch SATA unit that sounds very similar to the Hitachi DeskStar 7K1000.B announced earlier in July.

Hitachi says that the 1TB CinemaStar 7K1000.B can store up to 247 hours of MPEG-4 encoded high definition video and support up to ten simultaneous data streams. Comparing the specs of the 1TB CinemaStar drive to the 1TB DeskStar drive shows them to be virtually identical, save a name change.

Hitachi appears to have taken a page from Western Digital's book with the CinemaStar 1TB drive. Western Digital announced its 3.5-inch VelociRaptor 10,000 RPM hard drive in April. In July, western Digital announced a 2.5-inch enterprise version of the VelociRaptor that was the same exact drive as the 3.5-inch version, minus the cooling plate.
