Valve Pre-Announces Its Own-Brand Game Console

From X-bit Labs: Without any doubts, Valve Software has revolutionized the world of PC gaming with Steam service. Now, the company wants to fight for the living room against video game consoles from Microsoft Corp,. Sony Corp. and Nintendo. Considering the limitations set by game consoles and Valve’s vase collection of games, it just can be right. Apparently, with availability of Valve-branded hardware.

"I think in general that most customers and most developers are gonna find that [the PC is] a better environment for them. Cause they won't have to split the world into thinking about 'why are my friends in the living room, why are my video sources in the living room different from everyone else?' So in a sense we hopefully are gonna unify those environments,” said Gabe Newell, the head of Valve software in an interview with Kotaku web-site.

The obvious problem with Mr. Newell’s doctrine is how to bring a personal computer into the living room, when virtually all modern TVs feature cloud streaming of advanced video games, which means no game consoles are needed occasional gaming. Moreover, it should not be forgotten that Microsoft tried had tried to install a PC into the living room back in the early nineties, but failed and then decided to stick to the Xbox hardware console business.

It seems like Valve has got a secret sauce for PC bringing into the living room. That secret sauce includes its own hardware, a type of a console. Still, the console may feature just more freedom than the existing ones.

“We will do it but we also think other people will as well. Valve's hardware might not be as open-source or as malleable as your average computer. Well, certainly, our hardware will be a very controlled environment. If you want more flexibility, you can always buy a more general purpose PC. For people who want a more turnkey solution, that's what some people are really gonna want for their living room. The nice thing about a PC is a lot of different people can try out different solutions, and customers can find the ones that work best for them,”said Mr. Newell.
