Windows 11 gets retro with Vista boot noise bug

From PC World: If you’ve heard sounds from 20 years ago coming out of your PC when it starts up, it’s not haunted. Well, probably not. (I’m not in front of your computer and I’m not Egon Spengler, so I can’t say for sure.) But if you’ve been hearing the Vista boot noise instead of the more modern Windows 11 one, yeah, that’s a bug.

It’s only affecting people on the Dev and Beta builds of the Windows 11 Insider Preview, apparently, and The Verge reports that Microsoft’s Senior Program Manager for Insider Preview has acknowledged it as a known issue. Here’s the Windows Vista startup sound, if you don’t remember it or (perish the thought) you’re too young to have experienced Vista.

Weirdly, this comes less than a week after Microsoft got a little nostalgic for Vista, an oft-maligned entry in the Windows catalog between XP and 8. After Apple showed off an update to its macOS and iOS visual themes that was more than a bit reminiscent of Vista’s glassy translucent Aero look, Microsoft threw a little shade over on Instagram.
