From PC Mag: AI agents are more widely used than ever before, but a good chunk of consumers still have fears about giving them too much responsibility and access to their personal data. Apple is now set to roll out an update that could potentially reduce some of the risk on macOS.
Going forward, Apple will introduce "additional controls" that will require Mac users to take "very explicit user action" to enable Full Disk Access. Developers are using it in ways that could put users at risk by “exposing everything on their systems” without their knowledge and understanding, including their files, mail, messages, and browsing history.
This comes after a journalist from Inc. alleged last month that Meta’s Muse agent had accessed confidential data and messages stored on his Mac without his permission. Meta denies it, with Meta’s VP of communications, Andy Stone, saying that the journalist must have enabled “Full Disk Access and the Messages connector for Muse” to read his messages.
Apple didn’t explicitly name Meta, Muse, or any other app in its announcement, but notes, "As AI agents become increasingly capable and autonomous, the risks associated with this level of access will grow substantially."
