PS4 Pro update will make 4K games look better on 1080p TVs

From The Verge: Sony has revealed some features in an upcoming PlayStation 4 update that include tools for play time management, custom wallpapers, and library enhancements. The PlayStation system software 5.50 beta also includes a supersampling mode on the PS4 Pro that Sony says will enable players with HDTVs (1080p or less) to “enjoy an enhanced visual experience when playing some PS4 games.” The beta system software is rolling out to those who signed up and were selected for the program.

Under the supersampling mode, Sony says some games will render at a higher resolution, which will then be downscaled to match the HDTV. The feature allows players to get an image clarity boost even if they don’t have a 4K TV. Microsoft already has a supersampling feature for its Xbox One X.

If you’re worried about your kids not playing outside enough, Play Time Management gives designated “Family Managers” the ability to set limits for when and for how long each child can play. To do this, you just go to Settings and select Family Management on your PS4. You can also access this by signing into your PlayStation Network account through a web browser on PC or smartphone. The settings also allow parents or guardians to set the PS4 to log out when the child’s play session ends, and also to add to or cut game time.

A notification will also pop up on-screen while the child is playing to notify them of how much time they have left.

Users can also now import images via a USB stick to create custom wallpapers on the PS4. You’ll also be able to customize your Tournaments team page with a team logo or background from your USB.

Additionally, Sony is adding a “This PS4” tab that lists all your apps that are installed on your PS4, and a “PS Plus” tab that clarifies which games you own from the PS Plus Monthly Free Games service. These tabs have been added to the Library section. Under the “Purchased” tab, you can now hide applications including betas, trials, or demos you no longer wish to see. Old notifications can now be permanently deleted. Also new to the 5.50 beta are shortcuts on the Quick Menu that include custom friends’ lists and controlling music via different controller buttons.
