Report: Developers Preparing for PSN Username Changes

From PC Mag: Those of us with embarrassing PlayStation Network usernames won't have to live with them for much longer, as Sony developers say they're planning for a name change option to finally be offered.

Speaking to Kotaku anonymously, three people at three different game studios confirmed they've been "fixing bugs, tweaking settings, and ensuring that their games are compatible with Sony's plans." A fourth, meanwhile, shared a photo from Sony's internal documentation of a PlayStation Network profile with the option to "edit username."

Unfortunately, we don't yet know when this feature is going to be implemented because of the difficulty in fixing old multiplayer games. Developers have suggested that because PSN IDs were linked specifically to usernames it will be an arduous uphill battle to get everything straightened out.

Speaking at PlayStation Experience last year, Sony Interactive Chairman Shawn Lyden implied that username changes were in the works. Answering a question on the topic posed by Kinda Funny's Greg Miller, Lyden said that "you won't have to ask me that question next PSX." That said, Sony isn't holding a PlayStation Experience this year, so it's possible he's referring to 2019.
