HTC Shows Off Hand, Finger Tracking on Vive Pro

From PC Mag: Hand and finger tracking are coming to the HTC Vive Pro via the cameras on the front of the headset, RoadtoVR reports.

In order for the Vive Pro to know where your hands are, you currently need to use a pair of controllers that track your hands with external beacons. In the future, however, the Vive Pro will be able to track both hands and individual finger movements, removing the need for controllers at all.

HTC showed off the hand tracking at a VR conference in China and will make the functionality available to registered Viveport developers soon, RoadtoVR says.

Until now, the stereoscopic array that was the most obvious design change between the Vive and the Vive Pro has only been used for a few AR games and demos and were unused by most developers.

This demonstration shows how HTC sees its VR headset being used in the future, although it might take a while for the technology to trickle down to the mainstream.
