TSMC to Spend $19.5B Building 3nm Chip Factory

From PC Mag: As Intel struggles to move beyond 14nm, chip maker TSMC just gained approval for what's thought to be the world's first 3nm chip-making factory, a factory that is expected to start churning out processors by 2022 or early 2023, ready for them to go in the latest phones and tablets.

As TechNode reports, the new factory is planned for construction on the Southern Taiwan Science Park in Tainan and will sit alongside TSMC's 5nm chip factory which will be finished by early 2020.

In order to build such an advanced chip manufacturing facility and fill it with the required hardware, TSMC will be investing roughly $19.5 billion into the factory. The payoff makes it more than worthwhile, though. TSMC's biggest customers include Apple, Google, Nvidia, and Huawei, and all of them will be very interested in the speed and efficiency gains 3nm chips promise for the next decade.
