Sony PSP2: As Powerful As PlayStation 3, Available in Q4 - Rumours

From X-bit Labs: More rumours emerge about PlayStation Portable 2 video game console that Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. reportedly plan to show off later this month. According to the latest pieces of unofficial information, the system may offer the amount of horsepower that is comparable to the PlayStation 3, a full-sized state-of-the-art current-generation console.

Sony reportedly told its partners among game developers that the unit "is as powerful as the PlayStation 3", reports MCV web-site. The PSP2 will come in "brick" form-factor with familiar controls, just like the original PlayStation Portable, but will feature a "high-definition" screen so to enable more immersive experience. PSP2 is projected to use "a media format" to ensure that retail is interested in selling the console being motivated by the ability to sell software afterwards. Still, as the "Always Online" era dictates, the PSP 2 will also provide access to downloadable content, smaller games and apps via PSN.

SCE allegedly wants to ensure that games for the PlayStation Portable 2 are of very high quality and provide rich in-depth content. In ideal, Sony probably wants PlayStation 3-like games to exist on the portable system so that to differentiate the game console from game platforms like Apple iOS or Google Android.

The PSP2 is rumoured to be released in the fourth quarter of the year, as suggested by unofficial claims released earlier. The first unveiling of the console is projected to occur on the 27th of January, 2011, and then Sony is expected to release more details about the device at Game Developers Conference and E3.

Late last year Kazuo Hirai, the head of Sony Computer Entertainment, expressed interest in touch-screen technology, which naturally inspired talks that the company may implement a touch-sensitive screen in the PSP2.
