Nokia May Not Use Windows for Tablets - Report

From X-bit Labs: One of the fields where Nokia Corp. is not presently presented at all is that tablet PC segment, which the company needs to address and better quickly as it falls behind Apple, HP/Palm, RIM and others. However, while the choice of operating system for smartphones has already been made and it is Windows Phone, for tablets MeeGo operating system is considered instead.

Nokia's strategy for tablet PC market is largely not set. The plan may not include Microsoft Corp., but may involve MeeGo operating system jointly developed by Intel and Nokia, reports Reuters news-agency. Nokia reportedly wishes to make its first tablet right rather than rushing to market, and hopes to come up with something distinguishing that will also assist it with strategies for other screens including television.

"That could include Microsoft, it may not," the source said.

Intel itself is promoting MeeGo operating system for tablets as well as low-cost netbooks. That said, the two companies may continue to co-develop MeeGo in order to install it onto devices other than smartphones.

Considering the fact that Microsoft is only projected to release its Windows 8 for tablets sometimes in 2012 and Nokia may want to launch its tablet earlier, the company may not have a lot of choice other than MeeGo as Windows Phone operating system was not designed for tablets.
