Sprint to Cap Hotspot Data Plans Starting October 2

From DailyTech: Sprint is the third-place wireless carrier in the U.S. and has been hemorrhaging customers as many of them defect to AT&T or Verizon. One of the things that Sprint has always had in its favor was the fact that its pans were still unlimited whereas other carriers placed caps on their data plans.

Sprint has changed that “true unlimited” data plan with the announcement today that it would be placing a cap on the hotspot data plans that are optional with smartphones on the service. The old plan gave the customer all the data via hotspot connectivity they wanted. The new plan caps the data at 5GB per month with overage charges thereafter.

An ad that surface from Sprint showed that the in network hot spot data overage charge would be five cents per MB over the cap. The hot spot plan will still sell for $29.99 with the cap in place.

The Sprint ad does note that the new cap doesn't apply to tablet customers with the mobile hotspot plan or CL customers with a Corp ID or Master Service Agreement. This move really takes some of the good that Sprint had to offer away from subscribers. The data cap will go into effect on October 2.

Sprint has also raised the early termination fees on the network recently. The ETF fee has grown from $200 on the network to $350 for leaving early.
