Ubisoft: No More Nintendo Wii U Exclusive Games Until More Consoles Are Sold

From X-bit Labs: Ubisoft has been one of the biggest supporters of Nintendo Wii U game console and released several high-quality titles for the platform, including exclusive ZombiU. However, the game publisher will not release any more exclusive games for Wii U until the installed base of the console gets large enough. At present, revenue that Ubisoft can get from Wii U simply does not justify development of an exclusive.

“We need more [Wii U units] sold. They are coming with five of their biggest brands ever. And the yen went down. So maybe they will take steps that will increase the number of consoles sold,” said Yves Guillemot, chief executive officer of Ubisoft, in a brief interview with Kotaku web-site.

Ubisoft assigned a lot of resources on development of video games for Wii U, it offered six Wii U titles starting November 18 and then planned release two more in the first quarter of 2013. Among third-party game developers, Ubisoft is the biggest supporter of Wii U since even Activision and Electronic Arts planned to release only seven and three Wii U titles, respectively, between the launch and March 31, 2013.

It is obvious that Ubisoft is interested in the success of Nintendo Wii U. Previously, the game publisher called the platform holder to cut the price of the console several times, but Nintendo refused to even consider such an option despite dramatically low sales in the U.S. and Europe. With only several million Wii U units sold, it does not make sense for Nintendo to develop exclusive games for the platform from financial perspective.
