EBay Launching Virtual Shoppable Windows for Closed Storefronts

From DailyTech: EBay is giving the term "window shopping" a whole new meaning.

EBay will be launching virtual store windows called "shoppable windows" this month, which are screens that will appear on the windows of closed storefronts.

Customers will be able to use the touchscreens to find items they would've bought (had the store been open) and order them. The items are then shipped directly to them within an hour through a courier, and the couriers will receive payment via PayPal Here.

The first of four screens will come to New York City from June 8 to July 7. The new screens, which measure 9 feet across and 2 feet high, will sell 30 items from Kate Spade Saturday (a new fashion brand by Fifth & Pacific Companies Inc.).

The idea behind shoppable windows is for eBay to reach more shoppers. EBay can already be found online and on its mobile app, but giving it a more physical presence on busy storefronts in NYC will likely draw more customers in a whole new setting.

This could also be an ideal way for retailers to show off new brands without having to open new physical stores.

EBay has been feeling the heat of competition from the likes of Amazon, and is looking for ways to broaden its reach to customers. It has also been working on other aspects of its business in order to make it more customer-friendly.
