From PC Mag: AirPods have been around for a couple of years now, meaning it's high time Apple offered us a new and improved version. The beta release of iOS 12.2 to developers this week has given us the strongest hint yet that an upgrade is imminent for the earbuds.
You may remember back in February last year an AirPods hardware refresh was rumored, which would replace the W1 chip to allow for improved Bluetooth connectivity, add water resistance, and Siri integration so as to allow you to talk to your earbuds. Yesterday, Apple released the first iOS 12.2 beta to developers and as 9To5Mac reports, it contains a new screen explaining how to setup "Hey Siri" for the AirPods.
The setup process links Siri to the AirPods and the AirPods themselves carry out the recognition before transferring the given commands to the device they are paired with. Interaction with Siri through the AirPods is also limited to the user's voice alone.
There's actually a few rumors flying around as to what Apple has planned for the AirPods. As well as Siri integration, the refresh for early 2019 is thought to include an upgrade allowing for noise cancellation and wireless charging. However, a much more significant 2020 refresh is also expected which will present us with an all-new-design.
