From PC Mag: Yelp wants you to know it can do more than scout the right brunch restaurant for this weekend, or find the perfect late night noodle spot that's still open.
The business directory and reviews app is rolling out a new mobile app experience today that personalizes the Yelp dashboard and search results based on users' food and lifestyle preferences. When users open the updated app, they'll see a new "Add preferences" option that will filter search results automatically by dietary restrictions and lifestyle parameters like whether you're a parent or pet owner or whether you need handicap-accessible facilities.
Yelp will then curate a list of interests—from bowling, hiking, and jazz clubs to museums and flea markets—in an effort to become more of what Yelp Head of Consumer Product Akhil Ramesh called a "one-stop shop for all things local" that lets users tailor the app to their needs rather than adding filters to every search.
Yelp sees the update as a push toward creating a personalized search engine. Rather than relying on machine learning to customize the app, the company wants to start by asking users what they want, Ramesh said. The app then draws upon its years of data and reviews to surface targeted results.
