From PC Mag: Now that AMD has planted its feet firmly in the market for midrange 1440p PC-gaming cards, with the release of the Radeon RX 5700 and RX 5700 XT graphics cards, the company is now focusing on players in the 1,920-by-1,080-pixel (1080p) set. The launch of Radeon RX 5500 graphics processors aims for that more mainstream target.
Set to compete with Nvidia's GeForce GTX 1650, the Radeon RX 5500 is based off the same 7nm Radeon DNA (RDNA) architecture as its older kin, and it will come in two variants: discrete desktop cards (dubbed "Radeon RX 5500"), and laptop-based mobile chips ("RX 5500M"). These graphics processors were developed under the umbrella code-name "Navi," for AMD's next-generation graphics.
The Radeon RX 5500M represents the very first (possibly of many) laptop-based mobile chips in the RDNA family. It retains some of the same specs of its desktop-based counterpart, while stepping down the power in a few key areas, such as memory, the peak boost clock, and the TFLOP rating.
In a call with the company last week, PCMag was told that no AMD-made reference versions of Radeon RX 5500 cards will be manufactured. AMD hasn't released any information on the price or the exact shipping date of the Radeon RX 5500 line just yet, apart from "Q4 2019." Any Radeon RX 5500 desktop cards that do hit shelves at some point during the fourth quarter of 2019 will be from third-party OEMs.
On the mobile side of things, so far the only laptop announced with a Radeon RX 5500M chip inside is MSI's Alpha 15. It's an all-new design from the gaming laptop maker that will feature AMD mobile Ryzen silicon for the CPU, as well.
