From PC Mag: Back in September, Google decided to extend the life of eight Chromebook models by supporting them with regular updates for three extra years. Now, 135 more Chromebooks are having their life extended.
Chromebooks may be a cheap and relatively secure way to use the internet on a portable device with a keyboard, but they do have a limited lifespan imposed by Google when compared to budget laptops. Auto Updates typically stop 6.5 years after a Chromebook model first launches, meaning no more technical support or software updates for new features or security patches. However, this seems to be changing.
As Android Police reports, Google has decided to extend the life of 135 Chromebooks, meaning most Chromebooks, by between six months and two years.
Chances are, if you own a Chromebook then it's now going to receive updates for longer. To find out how much longer, just visit the Google Support page detailing the Chromebook Auto Update policy and search for your model in the list at the bottom. For some Chromebooks, this is a bigger deal than with others. For example, if you own an Acer Chromebook 11 (C740) it was scheduled to stop receiving updates in June next year, but now it will continue to get them until June 2021.
