House passes bill barring government from buying Huawei gear

From CNET: The US House of Representatives has voted to pass legislation that will prevent the government from using funds to help carriers buy Huawei's telecommunications equipment. Other equipment considered to be a threat to national security is also banned under the draft Secure and Trusted Communications Networks Act, as reported earlier Monday by The Hill.

The move is "critical" to protect America's wireless networks from "malicious foreign interference," Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman Frank Pallone Jr. (D-NJ), Ranking Member Greg Walden (R-OR) and Reps. Doris Matsui (D-CA) and Brett Guthrie (R-KY) said.

"Companies like Huawei and its affiliates pose a significant threat to America's commercial and security interests because a lot of communications providers rely heavily on their equipment," they added in a statement Monday.
