Western Digital Launches Faster 2nd Gen My Passport SSD

From PC Mag: Western Digital launched its first-generation My Passport SSD back in 2017 boasting 515MB/s data transfer speeds. Now the second-generation portable drives have launched, and they are much sleeker as well as being twice as fast.

The new drives are being offered as 500GB, 1TB, and 2TB models in a choice of four colors (gray, gold, blue, and red). "The new My Passport SSD delivers the speed, reliability and functionality consumers have come to expect from us," said Susan Park, vice president, Consumer Solutions, Western Digital. "It is a powerful and sophisticated solution for the everyday content creators, curators and hobbyists who need to move files quickly. The rounded corners, waving ridges and soft edges enhance the My Passport SSD's portability and make it easy to carry, yet also distinctly recognizable as a member within WD's award-winning My Passport product line-up."

As well as being a welcome visual upgrade from the first-gen drives, the main draw of the new My Passport SSD is speed. Western Digital is claiming NVMe technology coupled with a USB 3.2 Gen-2 connection allows for read speeds of 1,050MB/s and write speeds slightly behind at 1,000MB/s. Of course, the performance will vary depending on usage conditions, there's also a USB-A adapter included in case there's no USB-C port available.
