Xiaomi's 3rd-Gen Under-Display Camera Will Ship in Smartphones Next Year

From PC Mag: If you despise notches and hole-punch cameras on smartphones, then Xiaomi is the brand to watch as the Chinese company is set to start mass producing smartphones with an under-display camera in 2021.

The announcement was made via the Xiaomi blog. The under-display camera module Xiaomi is producing counts as the company's third generation of the technology, but no previous generation managed to make it into a phone. That changes next year, though. Xiaomi says it's now possible to, "perfectly disguise the front camera under the phone’s screen without ruining the edge-to-edge display effect," therefore unlocking the potential for a truly all-screen experience. However, it won't be first to market as ZTE is set to launch a smartphone with an under-display camera next month.

The third-generation under-display camera shows improvement in both pixel arrangement and camera algorithm optimization. By tweaking the pixel arrangement light can pass through "the gap area of sub pixels" and there's no loss of pixel density in captured images. Xiaomi is confident it performs as well as any conventional front-facing camera and boasts the same brightness, color gamut, and color accuracy as if it was placed above the display in the more typical notch configuration.
