From PC Mag: The iPhone 12 is set to launch later than expected this year and in two stages, but that just gives more time for leaks to happen. The latest suggests Apple is preparing to launch an iPhone 12 mini.
The "mini" naming convention isn't new. Apple has been using it for years for devices including the iPad mini, iPod mini, and Mac mini. So what better way to name the smallest of the next-gen iPhones than to adopt the mini tag?
As MacRumors reports, news of the iPhone 12 mini was first leaked by Twitter user L0vetodream, but has since been backed up by a photo posted by Twitter user DuanRu of iPhone 12 silicon cases stickers showing the different models and iPhone 12 mini is clearly printed on one of them. In total, we are expecting four iPhone 12 models, with the names now thought to be iPhone 12 mini, iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Pro, and iPhone 12 Pro Max.
By using the mini name, it could signal Apple's intention to replace the small iPhone SE with clearer branding going forward. If you want the latest, but smallest model, look for the number and the word "mini." That's far clearer than trying to figure out how old the iPhone SE hardware is, and means Apple wouldn't have to update the SE again in future.
