Samsung Will Mass-Produce 90Hz OLED Laptop Displays From March

From PC Mag: The ability to find a laptop display that offers the darkest levels of black while also having a very high refresh rate is set to get easier later this year thanks to Samsung.

Samsung Display has announced that from March it's set to start mass-producing 14-inch 90Hz OLED panels for use in laptops. The company sees the move as introducing a "major shift in the market as it collaborates closely with global manufacturers to achieve a new level of excellence for refresh rates in laptops." However, it's as yet unclear which laptop manufacturers have signed up to use this new OLED panel.

A range of laptops sporting OLED displays are already available, but this move by Samsung could trigger a wave of high refresh rate 14-inch laptops hitting the market later this year. Samsung Display is also touting the benefits of the new panel when compared to LCD, claiming the 90Hz OLED refresh rate "is actually 10X the fastest screen response time on the market today." The company also states it's "actually on par with that of 120Hz LCD screens."

If the claims are true, especially when combined with the darker blacks and lower power draw, the 90Hz panels are sure to prove extremely popular. And earlier this month, Samsung Display announced it had 10 new OLED panels specifically designed for upcoming laptops. Expect 1440p and 1080p options, as well as 13.4-inch, 14-inch, and 16-inch screen sizes.
