SK Hynix Is Mass-Producing 18GB LPDDR5 Memory Modules for Phones

From PC Mag: The latest smartphone models are set to get a major boost, both in terms of the amount of RAM they have available and how fast that memory is, thanks to SK Hynix.

Volume production of the industry's largest capacity LPDDR5 mobile DRAM modules is underway, the South Korean memory supplier announced this week. That means we'll soon see high-end handsets shipping with 18GB of DRAM, with the first of those already being confirmed as the Asus Republic of Gaming (ROG) 5 gaming smartphone.

What sets these new modules apart isn't just how much memory they pack in, but how fast the memory is. Many existing LPDDR5 mobile DRAM chips are capable of 5,500Mbps data transfer rates. The 18GB chips push that up by around 20%, with SK Hynix claiming they can hit 6,400Mbps. "This product will improve the processing speed and image quality by expanding the data temporary storage space, as the capacity increases compared to the previous 16GB product," an official from the company said.
