Sony Details SSD Requirements for PS5 Storage Expansion

From PC Mag: It doesn't take long to fill the 667GB of available storage space on a PS5, which has left many gamers eager for the SSD expansion slot to be unlocked. It's finally set to happen, but the drive requirements are, not surpringly, very high.

A new support page has appeared on the PlayStation website detailing how to add an M.2 SSD to a PS5 console. However, the feature isn't unlocked just yet, and when it arrives via an "upcoming" system software update, it will only be available to gamers who signed up for the system software beta program announced last month.

What the new support page does tell us is how strict the requirements are for the SSD. It needs to be a PCIe Gen4 x4 M.2 NVMe SSD with a capacity of between 250GB and 4TB. The sequential read speed of the drive needs to be at least 5,500MB/s and "effective heat dissipation" is required. In other words, Sony wants you to use a heatsink on the drive to ensure temperatures are kept under control.

Both single and double-sides M.2 SSDs are supported, as are 2230, 2242, 2260, 2280, and 22110 type drives, although 2280 drives are far and away the most commonly available. And even if you find a drive that meets all the requirements, Sony states, "SIE cannot guarantee that all M.2 SSD devices meeting the described specifications will work with your console and assumes no responsibility for the selection, performance or use of third-party products."
