Google Is Ending Support for OnHub Routers Next Year

From PC Mag: If you're still using an OnHub wireless router, get ready to upgrade as Google is set to end support for the six-year-old hardware in 2022.

OnHub routers were launched in 2015, with Google describing them as "a different kind of router for a new way to Wi-Fi." It was an early example of a router that didn't look out of place in your home because it hid the antennas and used "subtle, useful lighting." A year later, Google Wifi launched and quietly replaced OnHub.

In a post on the Google Nest Help site, Google says "a lot has changed" since the OnHub was launched and therefore support will end on Dec. 19 next year. After that, your OnHub will still provide Wi-Fi, but you won't be able to manage it using the Google Home app and Google Assistant won't work with the device anymore.

Before Dec. 19 next year, Google says new software features and security updates will stop. There's no defined date when this will happen, so we have to assume it's as soon as 2022 starts. Google really wants you to upgrade as soon as possible so is offering a special discount code to anyone it knows has an OnHub. If you are an owner, Google is emailing a 40% discount for Nest Wifi if purchased through the Google Store. The discount can only be used until 11:59pm PT on March 31.
