From PC Mag: Intel's 14th Gen Meteor Lake processors are expected to launch in 2023, and anyone planning to invest in one should also budget for a new motherboard.
Initially, hardware leaker Moore's Law Is Dead(Opens in a new window) stated that Meteor Lake chips will require the LGA 2551 socket as opposed to the LGA 1700 socket used by today's 12th Gen Alder Lake processors. However, since then another information leak by Benchlife(Opens in a new window) claims Meteor Lake will use the LGA 1851 socket.
As Videocardz reports(Opens in a new window), the LGA 1851 socket is much more likely simply because the LGA 2551 socket is not listed by Intel product planning for desktop chips. So, while upgrading to Meteor Lake looks likely to require a new motherboard, the dimensions of the new socket match that of LGA 1700. That means CPU cooler compatibility could be maintained, but the integrated heat spreader is thought to be slightly thicker so new cooler fasteners may be required.
As ExtremeTech(Opens in a new window) reported last month, Meteor Lake is expected to be a watershed product for Intel next year as it's the company's first tile-based CPU. It will use a mix of Intel and TSMC silicon, consist of four tiles, and combine three manufacturing nodes in one package. If that new design turns out to provide a huge performance boost over the forthcoming Raptor Lake chips, few will mind having to buy a new motherboard to take advantage of it.
