From ExtremeTech: Artists are raving about a new announcement from Procreate, a popular digital illustration software for iPad and iPhone. Rather than succumbing to the generative AI wave that has washed over its biggest competitors, Procreate has charged in the opposite direction—it won't be introducing or working with generative AI at all.
In a short video shared via X (formerly Twitter) on Sunday, Procreate CEO James Cuda announced that Procreate would not loop any generative AI features or tools into the company's products. "I really [censored] hate generative AI," Cuda said. "I don't like what's happening in the industry and I don't like what it's doing to artists….Our products are always designed and developed with the idea that a human will be creating something."
A new AI page on Procreate's website accompanies Cuda's announcement. Under the heading "creativity is made, not generated," Procreate asserts that AI is "built on a foundation of theft," and while machine learning is generally a "compelling technology with a lot of merit," its use in generative AI is a no-go for the company. The page also reminds artists that Procreate can't access users' illustrations—a comfort for those who would otherwise worry about Procreate offering up illustrations for AI training.
