Nintendo's Mysterious Playtest Program Is a New MMO Game

From PC Mag: Earlier this month, Nintendo announced a Nintendo Switch Online: Playtest Program and invited people to sign up ahead of an Oct. 23 launch. We now have a few more details, and it appears to be a new MMO (massively multiplayer online) game from Nintendo.

As The Verge notes, Nintendo posted more info about the Playtest Program online today before the game goes live on Oct. 23 at 9 p.m. ET. It has encouraged testers to keep things under wraps, but information was quickly posted on X and Reddit.

It's a 2.2GB software download, and the goal of the game is “to work with others to fully develop a massive, expansive planet by utilizing creativity and farmed resources," according to documents posted online. As the game progresses, players will find new lands, enemies, and resources on their journey.

Players get special tools known as Beacons, which emit a healing light to purify and develop a piece of land. The higher they place the Beacon, the wider their Beacon Zone. Players must then move, lift, or edit items in their Beacon Zone to help build a fully developed Plantery Block. Areas outside the Beacon Zone will be considered public, and only players who have been assigned the zone can work inside it.
