From PC Mag: Apple plans on spending up to $1.1 billion to expand the satellite connectivity for the company’s iPhones.
The news comes from Globalstar, a satellite communications provider that’s been powering the “Emergency SOS” feature on the latest iPhone models. On Friday, the company published a stock exchange filing about a new $1 billion investment after Apple previously paid it over $330 million to help Globalstar support the satellite services for its iPhones.
In the filing, Globalstar says the funding will “deliver expanded services to Customer (Apple) over a new mobile satellite services (‘MSS’) network, including a new satellite constellation, expanded ground infrastructure, and increased global MSS licensing.”
In return, Globalstar will allocate 85% of its satellite network capacity to Apple, a commitment the two companies already had in place. As part of the deal, Apple has also agreed to buy 400,000 Class B shares in the satellite provider, for a 20% control in Globalstar.
