From ExtremeTech: Apple is approaching mass production for its next-generation MacBook lineup, which will run on the M5 chip, according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman. The brand is reportedly preparing to launch new MacBook Pro models (codenamed J714 and J716) and MacBook Air models (J813 and J815) with the new silicon. All four devices are expected to launch in early 2026.
The revised timeline means Apple may skip its October-November MacBook release window in 2025. This breaks from the predictable cadence that saw the M1 launch in 2020, the M2 in 2022, the M3 in 2023, and the M4 in 2024.
The M5 processor could be a decent upgrade over its M4 predecessor, built using TSMC's N3P 3nm manufacturing process. This fabrication technology promises approximately 5% higher computing performance and 5% to 10% better energy efficiency than current M4 chips.
