Asustek Computer Plans to Reorganize Businesses

From X-bit Labs: Asustek Computer, the world’s largest maker of mainboards and a leading producer of notebooks, plans to reorganize the company in a bid to optimize its resources and also streamline its operations. Under the restructuring, Asustek will reduce its “manpower” in traditional businesses, such as motherboards and graphics cards.

Asus will divide its notebook business into two separate units: one in charge of consumer-oriented models and another in charge of enterprise and cost-effective products. The mainboard and graphics board businesses will also be divided in the same way: one unit will aim consumer market, whereas another unit will be focused on enterprise and low-cost markets.

Jerry Shen, the president of Asustek Computer, said at a news-conference that the company will “reduce the manpower” in its mainboard and graphics card businesses, reports DigiTimes web-site, but it is unclear whether the staff will be redeployed in other business units, e.g., notebooks, or simply laid off.

Unfortunately, all the details are very sketchy at this point. While it is obvious that neither enterprise nor low-cost desktops and notebooks require high-end multimedia capabilities, they still need to attain different design goals: enterprise-class hardware needs be able to work for a very long time without issues, whereas low-cost hardware should be as inexpensive as possible.

The final details of the reorganization will be announced after the Lunar New Year, which means that after the 26th of January, 2009.
