100 Million Units Later: Nintendo Wii Faces End-of-Life

From X-bit Labs: Nintendo this week notified its customers in Japan that production of the legendary Wii video game console would end shortly. While the company has made no such announcements in other regions, it is clear that Wii is facing its end-of-life. While it may be sad to see the device to go, its absence from the market may actually help Nintendo to promote its Wii U system.

Sales of Nintendo Wii at over 100 million units have outpaced shipments of both Microsoft Xbox 360 and Sony PlayStation 3, which both were sold in around 80 million quantities. But while current-gen PS3 and X360 are here to stay for a while, the Wii seem to be getting out of the game, as the company has reportedly explained its customers in Japan on the appropriate page. The destiny of Wii mini is unclear.

For Nintendo, discontinuing the Wii is an absolutely logical thing. The console is outdated and no longer motivates game developers to create new titles, something crucial for Nintendo’s earnings. Meanwhile, the Wii U is backwards compatible with Wii titles; more importantly, it offers much higher performance and better functionality for the end-user as well as improved business opportunities for both game designers and platform holders.

By present Nintendo has announced EOL [end of life] plan for Wii only in Japan, but it is logical for the company to cease production and stop distribution worldwide so to clear the road for the more advanced gaming system. By promoting Wii U, Nintendo ensures its future prosperity.

Nintendo Wii grabbed the video game console market by storm – mostly among the average and novice gamers – thanks to its motion-sensing controllers and a set of attractive titles.
