From DailyTech: Back in September 2012, HP CEO Meg Whitman declared, “We have to ultimately offer a smartphone because in many countries of the world that would be your first computing device.” After its highly-publicized webOS failure, HP is making its first foray back into the smartphone market.
HP will be rolling out two new smartphones in India starting in February. The two devices are the Slate 6 VoiceTab and the Slate 7 VoiceTab. As the names of the products suggest, the Slate 6 has a 6-inch screen and the Slate 7 has a 7-inch screen. Both tablets are powered by an unnamed quad-core processor and feature IPS displays.
“Consumers are looking to consolidate their phones and tablets, which is propelling the voice tablet market,” said Ron Coughlin, senior vice president, Consumer Personal Systems Group, HP.
“This is an exciting new category that represents a meaningful growth opportunity for HP. Our HP Slate VoiceTab provides consumers with a high-quality product at a great value.”
Both of the devices have voice calling capability and run the Android operating system. Both have 3G Dual SIM Standby features and front stereo speakers.
Pricing for the Slate 6 and Slate 7 are unannounced at this time. There is also no indication that HP plans on bringing its new phablets to the U.S.
